MSN User Problems with Capital Flow updating from Aspen

Problem:

  • We have observed problems with Capital Flow users who use a MSN phone internet connection. Specifically, the MSN tray program, seems to stop responding after the internet connection has been open for a number of minutes. This behavior has been observed in Windows 98, but has not been tried in other versions of Windows. This seems to interfere with the ability of Capital Flow 32 to request data from the Aspen Graphics program using DDE.
  • Information on the internet has indicated that this MSN tray program has created problems for other programs in the past. Some suggestions have been to re-install MSN, which sometimes solves the problem, or to disable the program, since it is not essential.

Check for Problem:

  • To determine if you have this problem, first start your MSN connection, the Aspen Graphics program, and finally Capital Flow. Before attempting to update any contracts, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete in Windows 98 and see if Trayicon.exe is "not responding". If so, it is unlikely that Capital Flow will be able to receive data from Aspen.

Solution:

  • First try to reinstall MSN. Restart your computer and see if you are able to start Aspen Graphics, then Capital Flow, and update a particular contract. If not, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete in Windows 98 to bring up the task manager and see if Trayicon.exe is "not responding". If so, try disabling the program.
  • First, if you disable the program, you will need another way to start your MSN connection - usually the best way is to create a new connection in "Dial Up Networking" (available from the "My Computer" icon on the desktop in Windows 98). You will need your user name and password, as well as the phone number from your current connection.
  • First remove the Trayicon.exe program from any startup settings in Windows. This can include the Program Start menu ( Start / Programs / Startup ) and the startup portion of the Startup Manager. This is available via "Start / Programs / Accessories / System / System Info". To test if you have removed all references to the program from startup areas, restart your computer, then press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to see if the Trayicon.exe program is not running. If it has again started there is still a reference to the program in some startup area.
  • As a last resort, to disable the Tray program, rename the program, located in the "C:\program files\msnia" directory from "trayicon.exe" to "trayico2.exe" or something similar. You may have to boot in DOS mode to rename the program, since Windows will not allow renaming an already running program (which is the problem if are at this point). Hit the "Start / Shut Down / Reboot to DOS" option and wait for the screen to boot up in DOS. At the DOS prompt, type "CD C:\Progra~1\msnia" to get to the proper directory ("Progra~1" is the DOS short path name for "Program Files"). The command prompt should indicate that you are in that directory. Now type "move trayicon.exe trayico2.exe" to rename the file. Reboot the computer and make sure that Capital Flow can update from Aspen Graphics.

If you have this MSN problem and this information still does not correct the situation, email or call MSN support and explain the problem. The crucial bit of information is that the "trayicon.exe" program stops responding at some point after the connection to MSN is started.
